It is am important one and hopefully, you will only need to make one in your lifetime. The wedding speech summarizes it all, hopefully the love, joy and happiness they feel for each other. The length of the speech may vary. Some couples prefer to keep it short and sweet while others like to present a timeline of their relationship beginning with how they met.
While some guests may say that they prefer a short and sweet speech, others may enjoy hearing the history of the relationship. You may want to have it be very light hearted or very serious and sentimental. However, you choose, it is important to plan ahead and have a prepared speech.
You may want to prepare an outline or jot down a variety of different ideas. You may want to reference books or the internet for ideas. Just make sure you personalize it and some extras touches. Once you have written something, read it back to yourself out loud to see how it sounds. Once you read it out loud, you need to decide if the words flow and if you believe you are getting your message across.
Think about time frame. How long do you want the speech to be? You certainly do not want it to be so long that people are bored and yawning.
What about structure? Ideally the speech should have a beginning middle and end. Essentially, you are telling a story so you want it to be cohesive and to flow. You may want to start off thanking people for attending especially, if they have traveled a long way.
Make sure it is positive! For goodness sakes, no one wants to attend a wedding and feel like they entered the wrong room and are at a funeral! Keep it mind that it is a celebration. No one wants to hear your personal problems or old girlfriend jokes. Also, keep in mind that you do want to embarrass anyone including the bride or her family.
Think of the speech as a toast to thank everyone and to set the stage for a wonderful life together with your new bride. You may want everyone to stand at the end and toast the bride and her family and friends.
Avoid any alcohol or drugs. You most certainly want to be on your toes and not slurring your words. You want to be alert and bright eyed!
Think confidence! You certainly want to present a good appearance so project yourself with confidence and maintain eye contact and direct your speech to the people you are speaking of.
You may want to practice your speech in advance in front of the mirror so you feel that you have rehearsed it and are confident.
